What Language Is This?

Hi everyone! First of all 'Thank You' so much for your support of Erika and me last month while we were co-hosting for Eileen's chosen theme.

This month Art Journal Journey we are focusing on Language, in all it's forms - the details are in our host Elle's introduction over on the AJJ blog and on her own blog - Empire Of The Cat.

I used to know quite a lot about the Language of Flowers but not specifically the yellow Tulip.

It's meaning is exactly as it says here - 'There's sunshine in your smile'

The background was similar to what you see here, but much brighter - I gessoed over it and went in again with some more stencilling

I stamped the tulip (Studio Light) and coloured it with watercolours - it also picked up some of the background inking colour.

I wanted a fairy at the bottom of it so the little Janet Klein book reading girl sprouted some shiny wings.

I wrote the words, and added 'smile' on a sunny yellow piece of paper.

I do hope you can join us this month.

Thanks for looking, Chris

  1. If this little girl and your wonderful tulip can't make people smile, nothing will. This is a fabulous first entry this month at Art Journal Journey, Chris. I love the tamed down background and the adorable little girl, but that tulip really DOES speak to me. Thanks for sharing this inspiring entry for Elle's theme.

  6. Funnily enough the other day we were singing "Tulips from Amsterdam" as we came back from the caravan. We didn't get very far as neither of us could remember many of the words.
Love how you have incorporated one of Janet Klein's little figures into your entry for this theme - lovely to sit and read on a sunny day. Your tulip suggests sunshine to me against that gorgeous background.
    Hugs, Neet xx

  11. What fun this is, Chris, and it is such happy art to see on a very cold day here. That is a very nice thing for the yellow tulip to say and it certainly looks like a happy tulip. A fairy is just the right thing to have underneath this tulip. I love your background too and love the whole piece.
