Guest Designer at Stamps and Stencils

I can't describe how excited I am to be a Guest Designer at the brilliant Stamps and Stencils challenge blog, the team are so talented over there and to think…they asked me to join them for the day…well…!!!

Last January I made a little hanging of Grandad Billy (time flies as I thought it was only about 6 months ago!)
I always wanted to make one of my Grandma Emma but….oh..you know….!
When I found that this months theme at Stamps and Stencils was 'Remember, Remember' I immediately thought of her.

She was a very old fashioned lady, and I don't have many photos of her. This one was taken on a trip to the seaside, not sure where, but probably Skegness or Mablethorpe, that's me hanging onto Grandad Billy's hand and my younger brother holding Grandma Emma's. We would have got there by bus or train.
I edited a copy of the photo so that it was the right size.

I started off with a little pile of things I might use,(I changed my mind about some!!)
I covered the hanging with some torn encyclopaedia paper,
added PA Fresco paint - Glassblue -through Tim's doily stencil,

painted over with PAF paint-Sky - I wanted the deeper blue to show through,
and then dry brushed with PA Fresco pain- Vintage Lace.
The next step was to decorate the hanging,
I stamped a film strip onto it to reflect Grandad Billy's hanging
I used one of my my new finds - the Works have some stamps for £1 a set and they really are quite detailed and stamp well - I stamped flowers onto a piece of gel printed paper.
I also inked some Tim tape
These were then added to the hanging
I stamped some of the Works stamps around the top and bottom edges
Grandma's photo was mounted onto some card with edges distressed and the edge of the film strip stamped onto the photo.
I prepared some embellishments by painting with DecoArts paint and then rubbed some of it off with a baby wipe
and assembled some bits and pieces

I stuck them on to reflect Grandas's hanging as near as I could!

I did find one more photo from our day trip, Grandma Emma did come onto the beach to sit in a deck chair, but she refused to take her hat and coat off. This was always the routine when we went to the seaside.
She did take her spectacles off though, I think the first photo caught her unawares!
Can you see the Punch and Judy tent in the background?

I can remember the coat was a light blue and her hat was navy. This was her 'best' outfit, she wore a brown coat when we went to the
Co-Op (or 'stores' as she used to call it) and when we went for the day when we got older we would go with her via the park.

Once again, Thank You to the Stamps and Stencils team for inviting me.

I am entering in

 Thank You for looking, Chris

  6. Gosh Chris, I can't believe it's been that long since you created the piece honoring your grandfather. And now you have a matching canvas honoring your grandmother, too. Both are wonderful, but as a guest designer, you have outdone yourself with this one. I'm always impressed with your art, and this is certainly no exception.

Congrats on the GD position and congrats on that lovely piece you made for it.

The little extra touches like the butterfly and those gears really create wonderful interest without pulling focus from the photos. Great memory keepers!

  15. Chris, I've really enjoyed reading your post, hearing about your memories of your Grandma Emma, and seeing how you put this hanging together. Love those blues, and the embellishments so feminine for your Grandma, as the gears are masculine for your Grandpa.
